Understanding Visibility Scores

How visibility scores are calculated and what they mean for your brand across 8 AI platforms

What is a Visibility Score?

Your visibility score is a number from 0-100 that represents how prominently your brand appears in AI-generated responses for your tracked keywords. A higher score means your brand is being recommended and mentioned more often, with better positioning and sentiment.

Key Benchmark

A visibility score of 60+ is considered good. This means your brand appears consistently and prominently across AI responses for that keyword.

Score Breakdown

Understanding what each score range means helps you prioritize optimization efforts:

80-100

Excellent

Your brand dominates AI responses for this keyword

Maintain position, expand to related keywords

60-79

Good

Your brand appears prominently and frequently

Target benchmark, optimize for first-position mentions

40-59

Average

Your brand appears but not consistently

Focus on content optimization and citations

20-39

Low

Your brand rarely appears in responses

Needs attention, implement recommendations

0-19

Critical

Your brand is absent from AI responses

Urgent action required, review content strategy

How Scores Are Calculated

Your visibility score is calculated from four key components, each weighted according to their importance in measuring actual visibility:

Mention Rate

40%

How often your brand is mentioned in AI responses

  • Direct brand name mentions
  • Product/service name mentions
  • Domain/URL references

Target: 30%+ for healthy visibility

Position Score

30%

Where your brand appears in the response

  • First mention = highest weight
  • Top 3 recommendations = high weight
  • Listed among others = medium weight
  • Mentioned in passing = lower weight

Target: First paragraph rate 15%+

Sentiment Score

15%

How positively your brand is presented

  • Recommended/Praised = positive impact
  • Neutral mention = no impact
  • Criticism/Caveats = negative impact

Target: Sentiment above 0.3 (scale -1.0 to +1.0)

Citation Quality

15%

Whether AI links to your content

  • Direct link to your site = high value
  • Link to content about you = medium value
  • No links = no additional value

Target: 20%+ citation rate

Key Metrics Explained

Mention Rate

The percentage of AI responses that mention your brand for a given keyword. MeasureLLM queries each platform multiple times to get statistically significant data.

  • Target: 30%+ mention rate indicates healthy visibility
  • Calculation: (Responses mentioning you / Total responses) × 100
  • Includes: Brand name, product names, domain mentions

Citation Rate

How often AI platforms link to your website when mentioning you. Citations are particularly valuable on platforms like Perplexity that always cite sources.

  • Target: 20%+ citation rate for content-driven brands
  • Highest on: Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews
  • Value: Direct traffic source and credibility signal

Sentiment Score

Measures how positively or negatively AI describes your brand on a scale from -1.0 (very negative) to +1.0 (very positive).

  • Target: Above 0.3 indicates positive sentiment
  • Neutral: Between -0.1 and 0.1
  • Alert threshold: Below 0 requires attention

First Paragraph Rate

The percentage of responses where your brand appears in the first paragraph. Being mentioned early indicates higher perceived relevance.

  • Target: 15%+ first paragraph rate
  • Impact: First position carries 3× weight in score calculation

Platform Scores

Each AI platform may give you different visibility scores. This is normal because platforms have different training data, citation behaviors, and response formats.

Platform Behavior Differences

ChatGPT & ChatGPT SearchStrong on conversational queries, web search adds citations
PerplexityHighest citation rate, always includes sources
ClaudeDetailed explanations, moderate mention frequency
GeminiGoogle integration, varies by query type
Google AI OverviewsSearch-integrated, prioritizes authoritative sources

Why Scores Vary by Platform

  • • Different training data and knowledge cutoffs
  • • Varying citation and source attribution behaviors
  • • Different response formats and lengths
  • • Platform-specific ranking algorithms

Tracking Changes Over Time

MeasureLLM tracks your visibility scores over time with configurable update frequencies (weekly, daily, or real-time depending on your plan) so you can:

  • See trends and patterns: Identify if visibility is improving or declining
  • Detect sudden changes: Get alerts for significant drops or gains
  • Measure optimization impact: Track results of your improvement efforts
  • Compare periods: Week-over-week, month-over-month analysis
  • Benchmark competitors: Track Share of Voice changes

Improving Your Score

Pro Tip

Focus on a few high-priority keywords first. It's better to have excellent visibility (80+) on 5 key terms than average visibility (50) across 20 keywords. Once you've established strong positions, expand to related queries.
